Hens

New Arrivals in the Hen Coop.... The first eggs of the season were set in mid-January and now we have some delightful fluffy babies to look after. Three buff Wyandotte bantams - Two Silkie chickens - and one Lavendar Araucana. We have more Araucanas in the incubator just now.

Early in 2005 the croft purchased incubators and during the year have raised a number of types of poultry.

First, we incubated eggs from our own hens and some white chicks hatched on Easter Sunday.

Then we bought some Indian Runner Duck eggs and six hatched....

Spurred on by our success, six baby turkeys soon followed .....

Followed by some Light Sussex hens In July, six little black point-of-lay hens travelled across the Minch from Skye to Scalpay. Here is a photo of one, with another in the background, together with the Muscovy drake.

One of the black hens went broody almost immediately. She is now sitting on half a dozen eggs in a nest in the byre. We are looking forward to the sound of chicks within the next couple of weeks.

Broody hen on nest waiting for hatch date.

Another two new faces arrived at croft 37 in March 2003 - a Muscovy drake and his duck. Both are settling in well. The drake is seven years old, the duck rather younger. They came on extended vacation from Keose in Lewis.

Also new - some more hens who arrived from the Isle of Skye in October
And a magnificent new cockerel.
